How Long Does Furnace Replacement Take?

analog-clock-face

Congratulations on planning your heating system upgrade! Whether your old furnace is breaking down, or just getting inefficient and needing minor repairs all the time, you’re ready for furnace replacement in Washington, DC. Now, this sort of thing is old hat to us. We do it every day. But it’s exciting for you! And maybe it’s also a little bit worrisome.

What should you do after you make your installation appointment? Do you need to be prepared in any way? Will it all be done in one day? How long does furnace replacement take, after all? Well, since we do it so often, we’re the perfect people to answer your questions. Let’s go!

Will My Furnace Replacement Be Done in One Day?

If you’ve gotten a professional assessment of your home and are making a simple switch from your old system to a new model of the same type—for example, if they are both electric furnaces—it should be a one-day endeavor. If a multi-day process is required, your contractor should have made that clear at the outset.

When would you need more than one appointment to have a heating system installed? If you’ve had one type of furnace and are getting something different, some preparatory work may be necessary. Your gas company, perhaps, might need to extend the gas line if you’ve previously heated without gas. Or your HVAC contractor might need to replace ducts that are old or badly damaged.

How Long Will Furnace Replacement Take?

We ask you to have the whole day available, so you won’t worry about having to rush out the door at any particular time. It can take up to eight hours or so for the whole process to be completed. However, sometimes it can be much less. Would you like to know how to improve your chances of a quicker installation? We’ve got some suggestions.

How Can I Prepare for Furnace Replacement?

Before your appointment, assess the area your installation techs will need to access. This includes a parking spot, the way to the best door for bringing in equipment, the part of the house they’ll need to move through, and finally the old furnace and the area around it. This is the first thing your technicians will be spending time on when they arrive, and you can make it quick and easy for them with a bit of preparation!

Clear anything out of the way so the technicians can easily park a large vehicle and move the new furnace to the door. Snow and ice, skateboards and flowerpots, and anything else that could make movement difficult or unsafe should be dealt with. Inside, move any furniture or tidy any clutter that could get in the way of bringing the old furnace out and the new one in and through the house.

Around the furnace, there should always be at least five feet of free space on all sides. This reduces the risk that the system will cause a fire, so don’t use this area for storage. Make sure it’s completely clear, so your technicians have space to work. Finally, put your pets in a separate room. Don’t let them distract the installers with their cuteness! It’ll make the process take longer.
