Despite the relatively balmy December that we’ve had thus far here in the greater Capitol Hill area, it’s imperative that you make certain your heating system is ready for winter. No matter what type of heater you have–heat pump, high efficiency ductless mini split, furnace, gas boiler–it needs to be thoroughly maintained on a routine basis. In this respect, it’s not much different than your car, and considering how much you spend on heating bills during the cold season, maintenance is definitely worth the small price tag. Here’s how to tell whether your winter-ready.
- Has your heater been maintained since last winter? If yes, congrats, you should be in good shape, barring problems related to ordinary wear and tear and old age. But if not, then you might be in for a rude awakening in the new year. Although you haven’t used your furnace or boiler in some time, that doesn’t mean all of the issues present last season have miraculously disappeared.
- Does your heater lack power? You may find that your heating system is not the powerhouse it once was. You can expect a gradual decrease in power over the long-term, but when properly maintained, your system should still be able to handle your heating needs without issue. A routine tune-up is the best way to make sure that your system is always operating at peak condition. It’s also a good time to evaluate your system so that you can make an informed decision regarding repairs or replacement.
- Do you like to save money? Let’s just go ahead and assume that you do. Routine heating maintenance is the best way to minimize your heating bills during one of the most expensive times of year. When dust and other debris are allowed to infiltrate your system components, they will have to expend that much more energy to keep up with your heating needs.
